MONDULKIRI

MONDULKIRI

Come to Mondulkiri, you should go to the large beautiful Mondulkiri forest near Sen Monorom: The Mondulkiri Elephant and Wildlife Sanctuary. This is a protected forest area and an eco-tourism wildlife conservation project, where you could visit and take part in an elephant adventure, go jungle trekking, and enjoy some wonderful waterfalls such as spectacular Bou Sraa, Romnea, or Pulong. One or two days here is well worth considering for your holiday: walk through true jungle, feed and swim with the elephants (NOT ride them), have lunch and sleep at the jungle lodge. Wild forest, wild animals, and wild experience with local people are all waiting for you.

Climate: Mondulkiri's climate is classified as tropical. When compared with winter, the summers have much more rainfall. The weather throughout the dry season is of 23 to 290C with plenty of sunshine.

Best time to visit: The preferred time to visit and experience is in the dry season from January to April when the climate is dry and dusty, while still being pleasant enough to tour the local area.

Getting here: It is 370 km (6-8 hours) by road from Phnom Penh to Sen Monorom. Most of the road is in good condition with exception of some potholes from Phnom Penh to Kompong Cham. The worse part of the road is from Snoul to Kaev Seima which has bumpy dirt tracks.

BEFORE YOU GO

Cambodia has two seasons, both affected by the monsoon winds. The northeastern monsoon blowing toward the coast ushers in the cool, dry season in November, which lasts through February, with temperatures between 18°C and 27°C. December and January are the coolest months. It heats up to around 35°C and higher in March and April, when the southwestern monsoon blows inland from the Gulf of Thailand, bringing downpours that last an hour or most days. This rainy, humid season runs through October, with temperatures ranging from 27°C to 35°C. The climate in Phnom Penh is always very humid. Thanks to climate change, Cambodia now experiences rainstorms in the dry season, cool temperatures in the hot season, and a lot of unpredictability. Bring your umbrella, although higher-end resorts usually offer one along with your bathrobe and slippers.
